Poland has given us some of the best in Extreme Metal, be it the dark atmosphere of BEHEMOTH, the soaring brutality of VADER or the simply mad technicality of DECAPITATED. Although there have not been as many as bands from Poland as there have been from Sweden, Norway or even Germany. Those that have come out have earned a place in the history of Metal. DEIVOS is another band struggling amongst the heavyweights to have its name there, but does it succeed? That is the important question.

DEIVOS is a five piece from Lublin, Poland consisting of Hubert (Vocals), Tomasz (Guitars), Mscislaw(Guitars, Backing Vocals), Kamil(Bass Guitars) and Krzysiek(Drums). DEIVOS play Technical Death Metal that is strongly influenced by Brutal Death Metal the production for which is pretty plain which works to some extent but there were many times where I had a hard time figuring out what was going on, especially on the more blast beat driven sections. I had to listen closely to understand what was happening, also on the track ABSOLUTE OF HATRED, I think the guitars were not as heavy as they should have been and could have used some layering. The playing however is top notch. "Speed" and "Technicality" are the name of the DEIVOS game as the hands, fingers and feet move like lightning to create a sound that is both chaotic and immensely complex yet not at all wankey, as these are interspersed well with gargantuan guitar riffs that will leave you no choice but to headbang and bow down in surrender to the mighty riff! Other than that DEIVOS offer some rather small but “ear raising” side attractions the most consistent of which are guitar solos which is something I haven’t heard in Death Metal for a long time, but what was even more surprising was the use of the "Slap Bass" technique (watch out Alex Webster!) which again is something that you don’t hear in Death Metal every day, but last but not least let’s not forget the use of the cowbell on the drums which is used perfectly and does not interfere with their style at all, this is something that DEIVOS have become famous for in the Death Metal underground.

So ultimately DEIVOS proves to be a worthy contender amongst the current heavyweight champions of Polish Metal but ultimately falls a little short due to the insipid production. This album would have sounded so much grander if the production had been much more detailed, but nonetheless this is a good album and although I wouldn’t recommend this to casual fans of the genre, I really think that Technical and Brutal Death Metal fans should check this out.

Recommended if you like: DYING FETUS, BRAIN DRILL, NILE, CANNIBAL CORPSE, SUFFOCATION.

Bottom line: A fantastic album which has some really great moments but unforntunately gets let down by bad production.
