IMR:
Hi HOWARD! What is DEPTH up to at the moment?
DEPTH(Howard)Hi! At the moment we just released a new single called “Can’t Let You Go”. It’s a catchy song with loads of vocal harmonies and twin guitars. Just the way we like it! Also we are in a rebuilding phase. Just got a new drummer AGGI, so he’s learning our chops and soon we will be ready to plug in and play again!

IMR: Does the name DEPTH have any special significance or does it refer to anything in particular?
DEPTH(Howard)Yes. Ironically it’s not the name I chose for the band, but it does signify that we are here to do serious music, hopefully learn to tell stories better as time goes by and communicate through our lyrics. That’s one of the reasons we keep our vocals clean.

IMR: How would you like to describe what kind of music DEPTH plays today?
DEPTH(Howard)Well… If you’re asking me what genre we’d fall into, I don’t really know. We have elements of funk and blues that are very apparent but we like to arrange vocal harmonies along side crushing guitars and dual solos. We’ve been labeled Hard Rock, Alt Rock, Prog Alt, Classic Rock… I’d like to keep it simple and say Rock.

IMR: How much of a group effort is required when it comes to writing DEPTH tunes?
DEPTH(Howard)Well the process starts somewhere in a hidden nebula cortex within the vast empty expanse of my brain and… ok that’s too much. I write most of the songs and bring it to the table. Then the rest of the band works out phrases and each individual identifies his parts and we work on arranging it till it sounds good to all of us.

IMR: DEPTH is purely known for pure rock. What boundaries are left to break? Any ideas you people focusing on?
DEPTH(Howard)Yes. We want to be the first band to use seriously hot semi clad chicks as dancers in a video… like AKON and co… lolz. We’d love to record an album soon. We have enough of material and we’d love to play gigs across India.

IMR: Are there any newer bands that have impressed you recently (Indian/International)?
DEPTH(Howard)Oh for sure! The scene is full of talent! I also work with anECHO and we really are into promoting contemporary non commercial independent music. So we do see a lot of acts that have potential to become that band from India that paves the way for everyone else to start getting noticed abroad. I love Slain, Junkyard Groove, Swarathma, and many more.

IMR: On a more personal note, when you are not playing music which albums are you listening to most these days?
DEPTH(Howard)Mostly Indian bands. I’m forever pushing my favorite Indian bands onto my friends, dragging them to gigs, to try and convert them! Lol! But I have been listening to a lot of Gn’R since I got my hands on Chinese Democracy.

IMR: How is the climate for Rock & Metal music in India today? Is it easy for new bands to break through?
DEPTH(Howard)I don’t think it’s easy anywhere. We can say that crowds are more receptive to original music and venues are slowly realizing the capacity for money spins on local acts too so yes the scene is a lot better and new bands should remember to hold on. I really think we need industry professionals like Manages, promoters doing this for the music because we have the music, but its not promoted well, and honestly what does a band manager do besides getting gigs and online promotions? Acts disappear everyday because no one is willing to make music a serious profession choice. Its always I’m a musician and my real job is ‘whatever’ you know.

IMR:
Where does DEPTH have its biggest fanbase do you think?
DEPTH(Howard)In Bombay. I’m very active online and do my bit to ensure people hear our music online atleast, if we’re not gigging regularly.

IMR: Which has been your favorite show or venue that you have played at so far?
DEPTH(Howard)It was a small gig at jazz by the bay. We were high, our friends were high and the jamming was just great that day! I also enjoyed playing the HRC stage for the Bombay elims last year.

IMR: Did the band ever face any greatest challenges so far and are you guys happy where currently DEPTH stands in the scene?
DEPTH(Howard)We’ve had our share of problems like any other band. Especially with personnel change. We’ve had too many guitarist come and go and also issues with the bands vision. But I think I’m happy that I’ve managed to now surround myself with individuals who share the same goals as I do and are seriously looking at music to make it a very high priority.

IMR: Wrapping things up, is there anything specific you would like to share with our readers?
DEPTH(Howard)Hey
