IMR: So Kishore, do you remember any early memories of music while growing up and what spurred you on from being a music fan to becoming a musician?
Kishore Krishna: My childhood's a blur but I've been singing as far as I can remember... then I guess one day I realized I that I had to write songs to stay (relatively) functional in society.
IMR: Your first album SNAKEISM is a pretty decent work that showcases some realmusical talent. What is your opinion about SNAKEISM? Are you satisfied with this album?
Kishore Krishna: Thanks ...my opinion on SNAKEISM is that its better than sex on a stick but I think its important to note that this was recorded in my bedroom and I don't really have the resources yet to fulfill my visions completely and that can be painfully frustrating so no I'm not entirely satisfied but I guess its part of a constantly evolving process and you've got to make the most of the circumstances you're dealt you know but I'm glad I can start working on the next release.
IMR: Could you tell us how the songwriting and the recording for the debut release came about. Also, what is the concept behind the album SNAKEISM?
Kishore Krishna: Well, I keep writing songs its sort of my "thing". Yeah, I'm quite obsessive about it but the recording process is quite whimsical though. I recorded this album on a whim that lasted over 2 months (and a lot of sleepless nights) and the concept umm...I guess the concept deals with vibration and stimulation(hehehe). I can't say that there is a definitive concept, its just a collection of songs that represent what I thought was cool at the time but if you really want a concept, I guess there's this bile coloured (pseudo)intellectual violence that binds all the songs together.
IMR: How long did it take to write this new CD.? Also, how did your artwork come together for the cover of SNAKEISM?
Kishore Krishna: I picked the songs out of this song vault that I've built up over the years so some songs were written during the recording sessions while others as far back as 2 years ago and yeah the cover...its awesome and we call her "SOCKETINA". The artwork was done by this super talented friend of mine Sumaya Mahadevan. We had this inter-media jam session and it yielded some great results and the photographs were done by another super talented friend of mine Varun Vasudevan (http://www.facebook.com/shotstoriesphotography).
IMR: You have been also playing in a band called NO SAFE WORD, how did you come across the band?
Kishore Krishna: Ummm...I didn't "come across" it, I started it when I was itching for a new outlet and my inner Clint Eastwood needed a fresh adventure and it sort of came together on the night the black lips played Chennai. I remember i went home all inspired after the gig and wrote the first NO SAFE WORD set list(now that's a rock'n'roll story) but its a fuckload of fun and the most badass thing around these parts. Check us out at http://www.myspace.com/nosafewordindia and http://www.facebook.com/nosafeword.
IMR: As a vocalist, who are your influences?
Kishore Krishna: Hmmm...I guess when I was a kid there was Roy Orbison, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, The Righteous Brothers, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin then tim and Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Bjork, Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Bon Scott, John Fogerty, Paul McCartney, Dylan, Ian McColloch, Elvis Costello, Robert Smith ...sadly even Bono, then I found the blues and that changed my entire outlook on singing and life in general I took a lot form Howlin Wolf, Junior Wells, Robert Johnson (watever we can hear of him), Wynonnie Harris and loads more and as I got older I found David Bowie, Jay Hawkins, Nick Cave and a whole other school of Rock'n'Roll theatre that I drew a lot from method singing(hehehe) and in between the lines there were some embarrassing experiments with 80's Hair Metal and Grunge but you live and you grow I guess.
IMR: I would also like to raise a question for the ADAM & THE FISH EYED POETS' online presence, which I feel is simply not up to the mark. Why?
Kishore Krishna: Hahaha! I guess in the past I've had little faith in the overall taste and intelligence of the Indian Rock scene so I never really bothered "promoting" myself but things are changing man there's hope yet(insert forked tongue in cheek).
IMR: Have you ever thought of seeing ADAM & THE FISH EYED POETS as a full line-up band in the future?
Kishore Krishna: Maybe, if someone somewhere throws a big bag of money my way to buy the gear I'll need to pull it off but either way NO SAFE WORD's better suited for the live scene because its raw and full of electricity. I guess being Iggy Pop is a lot more fun than being Leonard Cohen.
IMR: Can you tell us something about your future plans? What does the rest of 2010 have in store for ADAM & THE FISH EYED POETS?
Kishore Krishna: SNAKEISM 2 and a NO SAFE WORD album and then maybe a vacation.
IMR: One stupid question, if you were the president of India what would you change, and why?
Kishore Krishna: Hehehe! Listen to OUROBOROS blues it tells a very disturbing story. Well, the president's just a class minder isn't (s)he, but if I did have some real power I would first relegate religion and communal identities to base level cultural importance, purge it right out of the system of governance and replace it with a more progressive and relevant ideology. I would also liberalize a lot of things like get kids informed you know, start some sort of cultural revolution and I would probably introduce some sort of license for people to have kids because too many people not enough resources man. It's time for drastic measures. Let the living live with dignity and make people earn the right to procreate, it sounds harsh but then thats more (hassle) free love to go around hahaha but then I'm just a "song and dance man"!
IMR: OK, this is all for now. Thanks a million for all your time wasted answering this interview. Any message that you would like to convey to the fans? Good luck for the future!
Kishore Krishna: "Take a little sip from the poison flask and step outside the weary wheel of time"!
