White Beryl_Interview_IMR

There is a sense of contained excitement among the Alternative Rock quartet, WHITE BERYL from Delhi. Reason being, the impending release of their debut E.P, INCREDULOUS which takes their music, played live at various venues, in and around Delhi and other cities, a good, huge step forward.

With a female lead vocalist and some old-school flavor on the guitars, WHITE BERYL has a sound of its own, and they are here to tell us just that. Read on!

IMR: In a city like Delhi, which is associated with a slightly heavier genre, how difficult is it to make your sound stand out in a crowd that screams “METAL”?
White Beryl: Somebody show some respect. There is a lady in the band...hahaha!

IMR: Each of you in the band must have their own varied influences. How different were they? And how did WHITE BERYL come into being?
White Beryl: Everyone has different ideas and the ideas mix perfectly for us to come up with beautiful music!

IMR: You’ve played at various venues in Delhi, Mumbai, and were even qualifiers at the Channel V Launchpad 2010. The White Beryl: Launchpad has kick-started the careers of a number of Indian bands, both the ones who win, and the ones who don’t. Tell us about the experience.
White Beryl: Well, Playing at Channel V launchpad 2010 with some of the well known bands from the scene made us learn a lot and brought us to the next level. We realized where we are and how far we have to go.

IMR: Tell us about your debut EP, INCREDULOUS. Is it a concept album or just a mixture of ideas? And self-produced?
White Beryl: It’s a mixture of ideas that we came across after making music for so long. When we thought we have some good music, why don’t we share it with all of you. We produced it with Arsh Sharma and Srijan Mahajan (Studio Fuzz).

IMR: Take us through each of the tracks DOUCHEBAG, LIES, PLANET X, BRACT and DANCE INTO MY HEART. Are these individual ideas that broadened to become songs, or is it collective work?
White Beryl: Douchebag- Its just crazy song! And We all have faced douchebags in our lives, haven’t we? ;)
Lies- Its based upon the lies we are living with in this world.
Planet X- The chill trip song!
Bract- A song based upon a broken heart who again tries to stand and fly!
Dance into my heart- A soft alternative song based upon love and hope

IMR: Great. So you’ll have an EP out in a week. What next? Promotions ? Tours? More gigs? How do you progress now?
White Beryl: We will be performing gigs in Delhi then we will move on to other cities. Dates yet to be confirmed. Promotion process will go on.

IMR: Your say on the current Indian independent music scenario.
White Beryl: Struggling really hard to rise but not able to reach to its level.
We won't say there are no opportunities , but at the level that new bands are born everyday, opportunities fail to meet that level and big bunch of a talented musicians goes de-motivated .

IMR: Are we, in India, still amateur in appreciating genres like Punk Rock, Alternative and Funk, which are clearly not as main stream here as Hard Rock and Metal?
White Beryl: Honestly, People are running behind one or two genres and ignoring the other genres. People should learn to appreciate music. Not genres. Give every song a listen, we're sure they will find other genres interesting too .

IMR: Your favorite Indian band and why?
White Beryl: Can’t say about loving any one but yes, on the top of our head, we are truly inspired by Them Clones (New Delhi).

IMR: A line or two for our readers. Thank You!
White Beryl: Thanks to IMR and all the people for supporting us through this whole year. Show some love to our EP too. Go and Buy it!
