Arcane Deception-Self-Titled(E.P)

ArcaneDeceptionReview
Melodic Death Metal is one genre that has been attempted by few Indian bands, such as ACRID SEMBLANCE and CORRODED DREAMS. The last major “happening” being ACRID SEMBLANCE’s MINDGAMES(E.P) way back in 2008. Not anymore. After 3 years of that record, New Delhi based Melo-Death act ARCANE DECEPTION is out with their self-titled debut EP. Formed in 2008, ARCANE DECEPTION is a 4-piece band with influences drawn from bands like CHILREN OF BODOM, DREAM THEATER etc.

ARCANE DECEPTION(E.P) consists of 5 tracks ranging to a good 5-6 minutes in length. Cutting to the chase, I wasn’t highly impressed with the EP, mainly because it doesn’t feel Melo-Death too much. The brutality has been done away with excessive use of keyboard, which draws heavy influence from Bodom-meets-Theater styled “christmas” keyboards. Kshitij’s keys seem to the only element driving the songs, sometimes sounding rather cheesy. The guitar riffs are decent & catchy though, PAIN ARCANE being the best example where the Sourabh’s guitar(thankfully) opens the track. The guitar solos in tracks like ARCANE DECEPTION & PAIN ARCANE are brilliantly done, making the songs highly desirable. Vocalist & bassist Manu’s growls are pretty decent also, and suits the genre perfectly well. The last track COUP DE GRACE is my personal favorite, where the drums and guitar plays brilliantly for the major part, while the keys take the backseat, and control the atmosphere well.

The production quality is brilliant & polished, though the bass being hardly audible. There is no question about the band’s expert musicianship, as it is clearly evident in every track that they are trying their best to create their own unique sound. But in trying to do that, they overlooked the essential part – the “brutality” of the genre. Fans of DREAM THEATRE can safely omit this EP, but for CHILDREN OF BODOM, NORTHER and DARK TRANQUILITY fans this is an absolute treat, a definite must-have record.
