CAESAR'S PALACE is a band composed of Narayanan Nambudripad, Anurag Shanker, Kishan Balaji, Kenneth Wilson and Jason Zachariah. In a music scene primarily overcrowded by Heavy, Thrash or Progressive Metal, CAESAR'S PALACE is nothing less than a boon for listener’s preferring the lighter side of the music spectrum. Whether one calls them Blues, Jazz, Funk, Disco or anything in between is hardly to be considered as long as the music is enchanting and songs, melodic. It is the debut albums or E.P‘s and the few to follow that determine a band’s life span in a music scene which is always under a state of constant flux. Hence MINDFIELD which is a combination of strict adherence to musical traditions as well as deviation from it is what sets it apart from all the other albums that keep coming out every now and then.

However, many a times in the process of composing music one tends to emulate well established bands and their songs whether it be consciously or unconsciously. MINDFIELD therefore seems to have imbibed in it a little too much from the Classics of Jazz or Funk and has lost a large amount of its talent and capabilities due to this. Even then what they have managed to achieve is nothing short of exquisite and something like this is always a lesson for upcoming bands and musicians. The songs are pretty different and are an illuminating piece of evidence for an atypical approach to the process of composing music. Their sound is rather refreshing, music is soulful and loyalty to the 70’s Funk and Jazz genres is clearly evident.

Of all the songs, the one bound to capture the attention of the listeners is the single STARE INSIDE. One could say a song like that is definitely very rare in the Indian Music scene and explicitly captures mental struggle everyone seems to be undergoing. According to me it bears an uncanny resemblance to PINK FLOYD’s, FAT OLD SUN, though not as great but has in it the elements to do so. The song did have a lasting impact melodically which was rather psychedelic, and I guess it was the best of the songs they had produced. Presumably this was their preferred genre and more songs like this would definitely helpthem attract more listeners.

A dramatic change from the effect of STARE INSIDE, GET YOUR MOJO ON is what one would call a high tempo song, and thereby resulting in the band being referred to as Disco and Funk. I definitely loved the jazzy feel, with that simple but catchy guitar riff in the beginning. That is the essence of true music and the song will really attract anyone regardless of their genre preference. But still something about the song could not keep me listening to it or I could hardly recall the melody of the song at random. The song SWIM had a decent classical piano intro to it, which made me want to listen to the full song, however the song could not match up to the expectations and the structure and melody almost seemed to fall apart towards the end. Again, it seemed that the band aimed for musical grandeur but in the end just seemed to lack sublimity. BITTERSWEET MIND was also a song which impressed me a great deal, with the funky organ sound and the peppy guitar solo giving it an overall appeal other songs of theirs lacked, an impressive attempt at writing a song with an end result clearly mirroring their potential.

MINDFIELD was a decent effort on the band’s behalf and definitely deserves a listen, and I’m sure people will enjoy and appreciate their deviation from standard Contemporary music, which has of late become pretty monotonous. Therefore, I would definitely recommend this E.P as it goes over and beyond many other bands which loses its persona in a rat race to commercial success. The subtle change of melodies and harmonies has a characteristic hook embodied in it and will surely embed itself inside any one’s head who is ready to listen to something other than commercial Rock.
