I will always have high expectations from any band from the North-East, after hearing PROJECT BLEND LTD and ANTIM GRAHAN which totally blew me away. That being said I expect a lot from DARK CARNAGE and would be really disappointed if it turns out to be a bad album. So let's get to the point. Is it a good album?

DARK CARNAGE is a six piece from Guwahati, Assam. The band consist's of Edwin (Vocals), Madhurjya (Lead Guitars), Farhat (Rhythm Guitars), Sumit (Bass), Tanfiz (Drums) and Saurav (Keyboards). The band’s sound can be described as a mix of Deathcore mixed with Melodic and Symphonic Metal. Let’s start with the Guitars(as always), the guitars over here represent the Deathcore genre and contain everything that you would expect from this kind of guitar work, and although it is done well it’s not really anything that’s new. However the breakdowns (you can’t have a Deathcore album without breakdowns can you?) are really exceptional and some of the heaviest that I have heard in the genre and this is the part where the trio really shines. This is best exemplified in the song TYRANNICAL GENERATION. Saurav brings in the Melodic /Symphonic aspect to the band’s sound, although I would say that the symphonic elements are stronger as Saurav focuses more on creating an atmosphere with his keyboard playing rather than technical wizardry.

Although you can hear that as well in songs like UNDEAD REDEMPTION and ACRIMONY OF TERRORISM with his Janne Wirman-ish lightning fast playing, for me however I enjoyed it best when he combined his atmospheric sounds with some really heavy breakdowns, which made the breakdowns all the more grand and somehow made them sound heavier. This can be heard in UNDEAD REDEMPTION and the very creepy DEATHMATCH DESTRUCTION, Saurav definitely adds an interesting dimension to the sound and plays a pivotal part in giving the band its unique sound. Tanfiz’s drumming is pretty average and goes with the flow but it gets the job done and that’s what matters at the end of the day. Edwin however was a real disappointment for me his vocals are a little weak and definitely need a lot of improvement, I think they could have been more powerful, also there were times when I thought that a more diverse approach towards the music rather than just having growls and shrieks.

Overall I think this is a good album which is different from what is going on in the scene right now, but then somehow I can sense that this is not their best and they can do much better. This is still the first stage of evolution!

Bottom Line

In order to truly evolve into something great they have to work much harder, there is a spark in this band which one day will turn into fire.
