SWARA SUTRA's debut 3-song EP, INDULGENCE, is meant for any listener looking for some nice independent Instrumental music. A solo project of an engineering student, Sriram Ved, SWARA SUTRA believes in the freedom of painting music on an empty canvas. And with this belief, SWARA SUTRA juxtaposes different elements of music and creates a very unique sound, which is brought out in this wonderful offering from Sriram Ved and Anshul Karn, INDULGENCE.

Composed over a span of seven months, INDULGENCE has just the sound you need to listen to, to soothe your senses down. A wide spectrum of music, from Jazz/Blues to Alternative to Metal, knitted together with elements of Indian Classical/Carnatic Music, INDULGENCE is an achievement for a band so young in the field. It is sure to give you a sense of incompleteness when the EP stops playing after just three magical songs, and you will be inclined to replay those songs, over and over again, as it's sound just won't tire you.

RISE opens up with a very sweet riff, and soon the tunes echo in your ears, as you try to lose your way in the ambience created by the two very talented musicans. A beautiful part on the violin, played by guest artist Aditya Balasubramaniam, sandwiched between two equally good Indian Classical/Carnatic guitar solos, will set you up for an ethereal experience altogether. SHIMMER opens with an ambient intro, and gradually builds up on it to deliver a brilliant listening experience, though the Indian influence is comparitively less in this track, Blues being the primary focus. The title track, INDULGENCE, maybe is the best track from the collection, as it infuses elements of Jazz, Blues and Carnatic music, toys with them, switches between them seamlessly, and renders a gem of a track, with a Metal-inspired guitar part to raise your eyebrows towards the end of the musical piece.

SWARA SUTRA is currently working on a full-length album, and this was just a short sneak peek into their world of music, and with this EP, they have raised the bar for themselves. Apart from the tracks featured in the album , two of their other singles are doing pretty well on the internet, ARABIAN SUNSET and AURA ESOTERIC. Technically, the sound of the EP is pretty good too, though it needed a little bit of improvement. They are always looking for other musicians to collaborate with, and as such, we expect more such music from them. The album art has been kept simple, maybe not the best out there in the market, but what lies beneath the visual art matters.

SWARA SUTRA's INDULGENCE is a nice escape, if you are tired of listening to stereotypical music for a long time. An EP worth buying, and thereby, promoting and encouraging the band to continue rendering beautiful music. INDULGENCE should mark the entry of Swara Sutra in the Indian Music scene in a resplendent way.

Bottom Line

INDULGENCE(E.P) by SWARA SUTRA is more than a nice listening experience, and this brilliant debut EP should propel the band to the stardom they are worth of!
