The Lightyear's Explode-Self-Titled(E.P)

TheLightYearsExplodeReview
The 2-year Old-Garage Punk act from Mumbai, THE LIGHTYEAR'S EXPLODE recently ‘exploded’ into mainstream with a debut E.P. consisting of 5 tracks, which was released on the 27th March at Blue Frog, Mumbai. Assisted by decent mixing and mastering by Ayan De, the EP blasts into your ears with each track, even the artwork is very peppy and teenage. Oh yes, full justice done to the genre, and all in all, classy stuff!

The EP begins with SHE PROBABLY STILL IS. Weird name for a song, but the band say it’s about “a girl who you didn’t want but almost got married to anyway.” Ok, now that’s weird too, but the instrumentation is pretty good. Dynamic drumming, catchy guitar riffs make for a good listen and a good beginner.

Next up is my favorite track, MASALA PUNK. This track lives up to its name, with a lot of masala and Indian elements all fused into one super-great entertainer! Begins with drums and bass, then a retro-ish intro on the guitar is followed by a peppy guitar riff, and then the vocals set in. You know I’d go on to suggest to THE LIGHTYEARS EXPLODE to go ahead and come out with a music video of this track. It’s a full on action-drama-action- packed masala song. Definitely a winner!

Come to another weird title THE GAY SONG, but by now, all the weird stuff is sounding pretty good anyways. THE GAY SONG is all about being positive and believing that the worst will pass. Failed at exams? Broke up with your partner? Then THE GAY SONG is for you. “I know I know, the phase will pass….” and “…things will change for the better…” is how some of the lyrics go, but more than words, it’s the whole cheery feel of the barely 3-minute song that gets you in the mood and brings a smile to your face.

In come PRETENSES AND OTHER FORMS OF FAKEGIRI and WEAPON which kind of disappoint after the three super tracks in the beginning. PRETENSES AND OTHER FORMS OF FAKEGIRI looks like a more serious track, and the vocalist also gets to shout out a speech in the middle. The song seems to lose focus several times in between, and a lot more could be done with the instrumentation.

You can make out a lot of GREEN DAY influences in the tracks of their first EP. But it would be wrong to suggest that that’s the only thing you’d notice on first listen. A lot of character, originality, talent and musical ability have combined to churn out 5 good tracks, which the band should be extremely proud of. The Launchpad victory seems to have really put this band in the notice of the musically inclined public out there, and with this EP, there really shouldn’t BE any looking back! Genuine Indian Rock supporters, why wait? Go on and DOWNLOAD this EP right away!
