North-East is churning out young, talented bands over the years and an addition to the region’s premier live acts ,VIRGIN CREEP, throughout their one year of journey have reached maturity.
Before I start off with the E.P. review, a small preface. BLUE SKIES AND PAIGN is the solo project of Saib Bilaval, an independent musician from New Delhi. A few of you who read my reviews would know I say this a lot, but in a time and place where metal music is like those electric mosquito attracters, it’s hard to be tempted to try anything else and expect to get noticed (except the Classical and Fusion genres obviously).
Guwahati, Assam based three piece Experimental Death Metal outfit, ARIHANT represents ‘Destroyer of enemies as a sign of brutality’. A blend of Technical Death Metal garnished with Modern Death Metal, ARIHANT is a complete sheaf of the Brutal/Death Metal act! Started by Angshuman Hazarika(Drummer) and Pikashu(former Guitarist), the band started playing brutal stuffs and went on exploring Extreme Metal. With a new line-up on May 2011, they released their first single SELF-HATRED on June 2011. The present line-up’s are: Rituraj (Vocals/Bass), Bhaskar (Guitars) and Angshuman(Drums).
Let’s face it – North-East India has some of the "best musical talent" this country has ever seen. Somehow, their music as compared to other regions ranks high in terms of recording, sound quality and diversity. THE SCAVENGER PROJECT from Mizoram is one such band with a powerful Progressive sound and behind the instruments are some of the best musicians from the NE as well. With Victor (Ex-MAGDALENE) and LR-A, they call themselves an ‘Electronic-Rockgressive’ project and their debut album EMPTY HIGHWAY does every bit of justice to the band’s NE roots - it’s powerful, fresh and just adds a new flavor to what you think comprises the Indian Rock pudding. Check them out!
We are all under the impression that there is only so little, one artist can probably compose. But seldom do we realize that it gives you the freedom to do whatever you feel like creating; after all too many cooks do spoil the broth. I was never in favour of bands anyways. It prohibits the creative storm clouds from brewing and gaining new ground and hence hinders the process of composition and out of the box thinking. Why should anyone compromise with their ideas? After all ideas are what keeps us going from day to day. Prateek Kuhad’s self-titled E.P has all the making of a true Blues or Jazz artist. Of course, it will take time to mature into a full blown Jazz musician but musical talent does not have any age, gender or race. Some artists are born with it, while some spend their whole lives searching for that iota of musical genius in them. First impressions are sometimes enough to gauge the potential and expertise of musicians and these impressions are the ones that will define the artist in the years to come.
